In a grim revelation, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that a staggering 351 individuals lost their lives in 839 auto crashes within Ogun State throughout the year 2023.

The disheartening announcement was made by Mr. Anthony Uga, the State Sector Commander of FRSC, during a press briefing with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota on Thursday.

The toll extends beyond the fatalities, with 2,092 people sustaining varying degrees of injuries in the distressing incidents.

Uga attributed the majority of these crashes to drivers’ excessive speeding and other traffic violations. Wrongful overtaking, tire bursts, and night journeys were identified as additional contributing factors.

Expressing concern, Uga urged motorists, particularly those traversing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, to curb over-speeding and adopt safe driving practices to avert preventable accidents.

He emphasised the importance of installing speed limiting devices and strict adherence to traffic rules.

The FRSC official cautioned against the use of expired tires and encouraged drivers to ensure adequate rest before embarking on journeys.

In a proactive measure, Uga announced the FRSC’s upcoming public enlightenment campaigns at motor parks, places of worship, and educational institutions to raise awareness about the critical importance of safe motoring.

Taking a holistic approach, the FRSC plans to extend its reach to schools in Ogun, aiming to instill road safety values in students from an early age.

The commitment to public education and awareness underscores the agency’s dedication to reducing road accidents and promoting a culture of safety on the state’s roads.
