In a groundbreaking move, Hon. Comrade Sunday Dayo Asefon, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students Engagement, has championed the call for automatic employment for first-class graduates from universities across the nation.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the Nigerian students’ flag and Renewed Hopen Agenda in Abuja on Thursday,
Asefon emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in recognizing and rewarding academic excellence.
He announced plans to introduce initiatives by March aimed at revitalizing hope among Nigerian students and encouraging them to align with the government’s agenda.
Asefon expressed strong opposition to universities imposing fees for mandatory drug tests on students, asserting that such practices were illegal.
He supported the idea of drug testing but insisted that it should be conducted free of charge, condemning any attempt to burden students with additional fees.
Addressing concerns about student loans, Asefon assured that the government was finalizing plans to kick-start the scheme in January.
He promised transparency in the process, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring indigent students have access to financial support.
Recognizing the need to address students’ challenges, Asefon revealed plans to establish a students’ complaint unit, providing a platform for Nigerian students to discuss and resolve their issues.
The Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigerian students includes initiatives such as identifying and addressing challenges on campuses, promoting awareness about the student loan scheme, and engaging in social investment and empowerment programs initiated by the federal government.
Asefon also outlined activities like regional dialogues, international students’ day celebrations, national student summits, and the unveiling of renewed hope campus ambassadors.
Highlighting the importance of practical experience, Asefon announced plans for industrial attachments, internship placements, and mandatory absorption of IT students in collaboration with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
He emphasized the government’s commitment to reviving the reading culture in Nigeria, creating a conducive environment for academic activities.
