The Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday, elected Oludaisi Elemide, the representative of Odeda State Constituency, as the new Speaker of the State Legislature.

The action took place a week after the former speaker ,Olakunle Oluomo was impeached by 18 of the 26 lawmakers in the assembly.

A statement issued by the media office of the Assembly stated that the  plenary  which was presided over by Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi was  attended by 22 members and unanimously chose Elemide  as the new leader,

Elemide’s nomination, put forward by Adegoke Awoso and seconded by Ademola Adeniran, received widespread support through a physical voting process.

The Deputy Clerk, Mrs. Funmi Adeyemi, administered the oaths of allegiance and office to the new Speaker in the presence of the State lawmakers.

The change in leadership came after an impeachment notice was served on the former Speaker by 25 out of the 26-member Assembly.

The Assembly had earlier passed a resolution adopting a report from the Ad-hoc Committee, which investigated allegations of embezzlement of funds, high-handedness, and other offenses against the former Speaker.

The committee, in its report, highlighted the Speaker’s attempt to evade questioning and walk out during the cross-examination.

It noted the Speaker’s arrogance, stating that it “shows a clear admittance of the allegations” and recommended his impeachment, a motion that gained unanimous support during a physical voting session supervised by the Clerk/Head of Legislative Service, Deji Adeyemo.

Following the adoption of the committee’s report, Musefiu Lamidi, the Chairman, moved the motion for impeachment, which was seconded by Hon. Oluseun Adesanya. Majority Leader Yusuf Sherif then initiated the motion for the resolution of the House, seconded by Minority Leader Adeleye Lukman, leading to the immediate communication of Oluomo’s impeachment to concerned stakeholders.

This change in leadership marks a significant development in the Ogun State House of Assembly and reflects the Assembly’s commitment to addressing allegations of misconduct and ensuring accountability within its ranks.
