The Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has presented Barrister Mike Ikegbunam
He was brought before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Independence Layout, Enugu State, on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
The charges against him include money laundering and obtaining ₦91 million under false pretenses.
Ikegbunam faced a seven-count charge, with one count stating that on August 16, 2022, he induced the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes, and Associated Institutions of Nigeria to deliver ₦25 million under the false pretence of acquiring land at Umuagu Ndiukwuanu Town in Anambra State.
Pleading “not guilty” to the charges, Ikegbunam’s defense counsel requested bail, asserting his client’s responsible status in society. However, the EFCC vehemently opposed, citing the gravity of the offense.
Justice Umar granted bail on self-recognizance, requiring the defendant to deposit his Call to Bar Certificate and present a cousin as surety.
Pending bail fulfilment, Ikegbunam was remanded in EFCC custody. The trial is scheduled for March 21, 2024.
Ikegbunam’s arrest on July 12, 2023, followed allegations by the Senior Staff Association that he received ₦91 million for land purchase.
Investigations revealed he used ₦16.5 million to acquire personal land in Awka, Anambra State, after refunding ₦10 million to the association.
