The Labour Party has issued a stern rebuke to Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), accusing him of meddling in the party’s internal affairs and exhibiting unacceptable conduct.
In a strongly worded statement released by the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party responded to an open letter penned by the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission.
The letter, signed by Titus Amba and Chris Uyot, alleged that LP’s National Working Committee (NWC) was planning a clandestine national convention in Umuahia, Abia State, on March 27, to re-elect Julius Abure as the sole administrator of the party.
Dismissing these claims, Ifoh affirmed the LP’s intention to proceed with the scheduled national convention.
He expressed disdain for the NLC’s intervention, citing previous instances of conflict between the two entities.
Ifoh highlighted efforts made by Abure to foster cooperation between the LP, NLC, and Trade Union Congress (TUC), which have now been undermined by Ajaero’s actions.
The LP’s statement questioned Ajaero’s motives and called for him to resign from his position within the NLC if he seeks leadership within the LP.
Emphasizing that party politics should be conducted at the grassroots level, Ifoh criticized the NLC for purportedly lacking card-carrying members within the LP and accused its members of supporting rival political parties.
Asserting the LP’s autonomy from the NLC, Ifoh urged the latter to focus solely on its mandate of defending workers’ rights.
He said despite the interference, the party is determined to proceed with its convention, citing ongoing consultations with stakeholders.
