Gunmen Ambush Ogun Chiefs, Kill Security Officer

Gunmen launched a deadly attack on two traditional Chiefs (Baales) in Ogun State, leaving them wounded, and killing a security officer.

Saibu Razaq of Keleu village and Sesi Ọdunjo of Abule-Oko Village were targeted while returning from a Council of Baales meeting at Obalade Abule Oba village.

The incident, which occurred around 4 pm on Thursday between Alabe and Okesa villages in the Ewekoro Local Government Area, shocked the community.

According to a police source, the assailants, numbering about five, ambushed the chiefs unexpectedly, shooting them in the head and shoulders.

As news of the attack spread, members of the Social Orientation and Safety Corps rushed to the scene, only to encounter gunfire from the assailants.

Tragically, one of the security officers was fatally shot, while others sustained injuries.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations officer, Odutola Omolola, stated that the wounded chiefs were receiving treatment at the hospital.

She lamented the loss of the vigilante corps member, who bravely responded to the attack but succumbed to his injuries.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, as no valuables were taken from the victims.

She added that nevertheless, authorities have launched a thorough investigation, with police, vigilante groups, hunters, and other security agencies combing the area for clues.

This attack echoes a similar tragedy in January 2024 when gunmen suspected to be herdsmen killed two traditional rulers in Ekiti State.

The Ekiti State Police Command later made an arrest in connection with the killings, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by traditional leaders in the region.
