Former Presidential aspirant and prominent figure within the People’s Democratic Party, Dele Momodu, has sharply criticized the recent introduction of a 0.5 percent cyber security levy on all banking transactions in Nigeria.
Momodu attributed it to what he perceives as the current administration’s failure to innovate.
Momodu, speaking on Eagle FM’s current affairs programme, Frontline, condemned the levy as an additional burden on an already overtaxed populace.
He urged the government to explore alternative revenue sources rather than exacerbating the hardships faced by Nigerians.
Pointing to what he sees as a lack of sensitivity from the current administration, Momodu highlighted the removal of fuel subsidy as another example of misplaced priorities.
He advocated a more focused approach to combating corruption, particularly within the downstream sector.
Expressing concerns over the efficacy of anti-corruption efforts, Momodu criticized the perceived ineffectiveness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), suggesting that corruption remains rampant.
Shifting focus to the political landscape, Momodu weighed in on the crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Sim Fubara faces threats of impeachment from members of the state house of assembly aligned with former Governor Nyesom Wike.
Momodu described potential impeachment as a direct affront to President Bola Tinubu, who had previously mediated peace efforts in the state.
Accusing Wike of undermining the peace agreement brokered by Tinubu, Momodu called for decisive action from the President to rein in Wike and allow Fubara to govern effectively.
He further alleged external influence, suggesting that Wike is being supported by the central government to destabilize the PDP in Rivers State.
