Katsina State Government has declared that it will not negotiate with terrorists, labeling such efforts as perilous and counterproductive.
Dr. Nasiru Danmusa, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, made this announcement on Monday.
He emphasised the urgent need for the Nigerian federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, to bolster local security forces with advanced weaponry to combat the escalating threat posed by bandits and other criminal entities in the state.
In a candid disclosure following an emergency security meeting chaired by Governor Malam Dikko Radda, Dr. Danmusa revealed that the state government has resolved to maintain a firm stance against the bandits, who have increasingly armed themselves with sophisticated weapons such as Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs).
He stated that any form of negotiation would only embolden the criminals, who have shown a clear intent to kill and plunder to fund their activities.
“We do not believe that negotiation with bandits is a viable strategy,” Dr. Danmusa asserted.
“Their actions make it evident that their primary goal is to create chaos and destruction, thereby facilitating the sale of stolen cattle and other goods to finance their operations.
“Dr. Danmusa underscored the robust cooperation between the state government and security agencies, which has been instrumental in their ongoing efforts to combat banditry.
“Our synergy with security agencies is strong, and this collaborative approach is our key advantage in this fight,” he said.
Highlighting recent security developments, Dr. Danmusa noted a disturbing trend where bandits have shifted tactics, targeting remote and vulnerable communities in Malumfashi, Faskari, and Bakori Local Government Areas.
These attacks are no longer driven by ransom demands or property theft but appear to be a strategic move to force government negotiations, a tactic the government resolutely rejects.
“The government of Katsina State is committed to addressing the security challenges head-on,” Dr. Danmusa continued.
“Governor Radda has made security his top priority, with substantial investments being channeled into the sector.
In today’s meeting, we made significant decisions to counter the recent spate of attacks and ensure the safety of our citizens.
“Dr. Danmusa also reported notable progress in reclaiming territories from bandit control, stating, “We have liberated about 12 Local Government Areas from the grip of bandits, and as the farming season approaches, these areas will witness peaceful agricultural activities.
“While specific strategies for the frontline Local Government Areas remain confidential for security reasons, Dr. Danmusa assured that plans are in place to ensure farmers can safely access their lands during the rainy season.
“Our commitment is unwavering, and we will do everything in our power to restore peace and security to Katsina State,” he concluded.
The call for enhanced federal support, particularly in terms of sophisticated weaponry, underscores the gravity of the situation and the determination of the Katsina State government to eliminate the bandit threat without resorting to negotiations, which are deemed to compromise the state’s security and integrity.
