The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Hashiru Baku, the alleged mastermind behind the brutal murder of Brigadier General Harold Udokwere (rtd).
Udokwere, who served as the National Chairman of the Retired Members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, was killed during a home invasion by armed robbers on June 22, 2024.
The tragic incident shocked the nation, especially as it involved a high-profile retired military officer.
According to police reports, the armed robbers not only murdered Udokwere but also stole his firearm, wristwatch, and his wife’s jewelry.
On June 24, 2024, police had already arrested and paraded four suspects in connection with the heinous crime: Ibrahim Rabiu, Nafiu Jamil, Aliyu Abdullahi, and Mohammed Nuhu.
However, the arrest of Baku in Kano represents a major breakthrough in the investigation.
Addressing journalists on Monday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, confirmed Baku’s arrest, revealing that he was attempting to flee the country when he was apprehended.
Igweh detailed Baku’s notorious past, highlighting that he was an escapee from the Kuje Correctional Centre, which had experienced a security breach allowing inmates to escape.
“I did show you the four killers, kidnappers, and robbers that went and killed Brigadier-General Uwe Harrod, retired,” Igweh stated.
“We have recovered the general’s gun, his wristwatch, and the wife’s jewelry which they stole from the general’s house.
The organiser is here and we have arrested him. He was in prison and during the Kuje Correctional Centre attack, he escaped.”
Igweh expressed frustration over Baku’s continued criminal activities despite his escape from incarceration. “Instead of him repenting, he continued with more audacity.
“ We arrested him in Kano where he was trying to exit the country,” he said.
The police also discovered various drugs at Baku’s residence, suggesting he and his accomplices used them to fuel their criminal activities.
The arrest of Baku is expected to provide more insights into the murder of Brigadier General Udokwere and possibly lead to further arrests of those involved in the crime.
The police commissioner reassured the public of the commitment of the FCT Police command to ensure justice is served and to maintain security within the territory.
