In a heartfelt response to a compelling human-interest story, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, the Wife of the Ogun State Governor, visited 24-year-old Bilikis Salami, whose challenging journey was brought to light by Punch Newspapers on Saturday, January 20, 2024.
Bilikis, grappling with the amputation of her arm due to sickle cell anemia, garnered the attention of Mrs. Abiodun, prompting swift action.
Displaying a deep sense of empathy, Mrs. Abiodun promptly located Bilikis’s family home in Irolu town, Ikenne local government area of Ogun State.
During her visit, Mrs. Abiodun not only generously donated food and essential items to Bilikis and her family but also made a heartfelt commitment to providing comprehensive support for her rehabilitation and seamless integration into society.
Recognizing the importance of economic empowerment, Mrs. Abiodun pledged financial assistance to boost Bilikis’s clothing business, coupled with a commitment to offering guidance through training and education in her chosen trade.
Expressing the emotional impact of Bilikis’s story, Mrs. Abiodun shared, “Immediately I read Bilikis’s story in Punch Newspapers, I was deeply moved by her plight.
Not only has she had to confront the challenges of sickle cell disease, but she now grapples with societal stigma due to the amputation of her arm.”
Mrs. Abiodun emphasized the urgency of her response, stating that upon reading the story, she wasted no time in directing her aides to locate Bilikis as soon as possible. Within a few hours, the team successfully reached the family.
“I was both happy and relieved that we will be able to intervene in her situation and work with her to turn her life around for good,” she added.
Expressing gratitude to Punch Newspapers and the writer of the story, Victoria Edeme, Mrs. Abiodun acknowledged the crucial role of journalists in highlighting pressing issues despite competing news priorities.
“I am happy that journalists continue to shine light on issues that people are facing, so that those who are able to intervene can get a chance too. I encourage others to do the same,” she advised.
