Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered security agencies to arrest those responsible for the killing of his ally, Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, amid a lingering dispute over the control of motor parks in the state.
Oyeyemi was reportedly killed in Ile-Ife on Sunday as tensions escalated over the leadership and control of commercial motor parks in the state.
The deceased was said to have been involved in a struggle for control of the parks with the current leader of commercial drivers, Nurudeen Alowonle.
Reacting to the incident, Adeleke directed the police and other security agencies to fish out the perpetrators and ensure that they face the full weight of the law.
The governor also ordered the immediate vacation of motor parks by the contending groups as part of measures to prevent further violence.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said the government would not allow the dispute to degenerate into a breakdown of law and order.
“Law and order must be maintained. There will be no sacred cows as all culprits will be brought to book,” the governor stated.
Adeleke appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that his administration would take steps to restore peace in the affected parks and communities.
“We call on members of the public to remain calm. We will ensure restoration of peace in all the affected parks and areas.
“The security agencies are under instruction to ensure the sustainability of peace at all cost,” he added.
The governor also announced plans to overhaul the management of motor parks and garages across Osun State, saying his administration would reintroduce the Park Management System.
“We are reintroducing the Park Management System. I will soon issue an executive order to give effect to the new management system to manage parks and garages across the state,” Adeleke said.
The development comes against the backdrop of the prolonged contest over the control and administration of commercial transport parks in the state, with rival interests seeking influence over the sector.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council during the August 15 governorship election, Pelumi Olajengbesi, expressed grief over Oyeyemi’s death.
Olajengbesi, in a Facebook post on Sunday, described the killing as “deeply unfortunate and painful,” saying the loss of life should prompt a broader reflection on violence and the value placed on human life.
“The loss of any human life through violence should trouble us all,” he said.
He urged residents and political actors to reject violence and promote peaceful means of resolving disputes.
“All of us, as a society, have a responsibility to build a culture where violence is not celebrated, where human life is respected, and where strength is measured by character rather than force,” Olajengbesi stated.
He called for a collective effort to discourage violence and promote respect for human dignity.
Olajengbesi also condoled with Oyeyemi’s family, friends and others affected by the incident, praying for peace in Osun State.
The governor’s directive is expected to place renewed focus on the security and administration of motor parks across the state, particularly as authorities move to implement a new framework for their management.
