A 36-year-old woman, Anulika Onyeanusia, arrested in Onitsha, Anambra State, over the alleged sexual exploitation of her daughters, has admitted receiving up to $300 from a foreign man in connection with sexualised material involving the children.
Onyeanusia, who pleaded for forgiveness following her arrest, attributed her alleged actions to what she described as the handiwork of the “devil.”
The woman was arrested after a disturbing livestream involving one of her children circulated online, triggering public outrage and calls for urgent intervention by security agencies and child-protection authorities.
During preliminary investigations, the suspect reportedly admitted that she had received money from an American man in connection with the material, with $300 said to be the highest payment she received.
“It was the handiwork of the devil. I am sorry, forgive me,” she said.
She added, “The highest I’ve made is $300. It was one American guy that was paying me to do it, sometimes $100, sometimes $300.”
The suspect also reportedly claimed that her husband was unaware of what she had allegedly been doing to their two daughters.
The Anambra State Police Command said the investigation following the woman’s arrest also resulted in the rescue of four children aged two, three, six and nine.
The command said items considered relevant to the investigation were also recovered.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the command said the suspect remained in custody while detectives continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged offences.
“The suspect is currently in police custody as the command intensifies its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence and the possible involvement of other persons,” Ikenga said.
The police spokesman added that the suspect’s husband was also being questioned to establish whether he had any connection with the alleged offence.
“The husband of the suspect is also undergoing interrogation to determine whether he has any connection with the alleged offence,” he stated.
The police did not say that the husband had been charged with any offence, and his interrogation does not by itself establish involvement.
The development has raised fresh concerns about the exploitation of children through digital platforms, particularly the use of online content for financial gain.
The police said their investigation was ongoing and would determine the full circumstances of the case, including whether other individuals were involved.
