Leaders of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, including Governor Dapo Abiodun and three former governors, on Monday adopted the Senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
The decision was reached at a high-level strategic caucus meeting held at the APC secretariat in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The meeting, which lasted about two hours, was attended by prominent stakeholders, including former governors Olusegun Osoba, Ibikunle Amosun and Gbenga Daniel, alongside other governorship aspirants such as Iyabo Obasanjo, Gboyega Isiaka, Tunde Lemo and Isiak Akinlade.
Announcing the outcome, Abiodun described the adoption of Adeola as unanimous, attributing the development to what he called a rare display of political maturity and sacrifice among party leaders.
“It gives me great pleasure, on behalf of all of you, to congratulate Senator Adeola as our consensus and unanimously selected governorship candidate for the 2027 election,” the governor said.
He commended aspirants and stakeholders for embracing unity, stressing that the spirit of “no victor, no vanquished” must guide the party going forward.
Abiodun, however, cautioned that the emergence of a consensus candidate does not guarantee electoral victory, urging party members to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the polls.
“Let us remember that just because we now have a candidate does not translate to the fact that we have won the election. We must go back and work for victory,” he added.
In his response, Adeola, who chairs the Senate Committee on Appropriation, expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to consolidate on the achievements of past and present administrations in the state if elected governor.
The development signals a major step in the APC’s early preparations for the 2027 governorship race in Ogun State, with party leaders closing ranks to present a united front ahead of what is expected to be a keenly contested election.
