The All Progressives Congress (APC) has sharply rebuked Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), over his recent accusations.
Kwankwaso had claimed that the APC-led federal government was allegedly attempting to foster a new breed of Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents in Northern Nigeria.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka,stated this in a statement he issued on Tuesday.
Morka described Kwankwaso’s allegations as “grossly insensitive, unwarranted, and unacceptable,” criticizing the senator for making such serious claims without evidence.
“Without any shred of evidence, he further alleged that certain individuals in APC fold were goading the federal government with the goal of reclaiming Kano State through a declaration of a state of emergency,” Morka stated.
He highlighted that Kwankwaso’s comments were made in reference to the ongoing Emirate tussle in Kano, which has been a source of tension in the region.
Morka expressed disappointment in Kwankwaso, noting that as a former Governor and Minister of Defence, he should demonstrate greater discretion and understanding of the severe social, political, and security implications of his statements.
“We consider Kwankwaso’s comments to be disappointing, highly incendiary and unconscionable for an individual of his standing,” Morka added.
The APC spokesperson stressed that it was disturbing for Kwankwaso to accuse the government so casually of attempting to create a new breed of Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents.
He reminded the public of the horrors inflicted by Boko Haram, whose acts of terror have devastated the lives of countless innocent citizens and brave soldiers.
Morka pointed out that the federal government has remained neutral on the emirate crisis in Kano from the beginning.
“As a government that thrives on respect for the rule of law and constitutional liberties, the federal government has confidence in our courts to fairly adjudicate the matter that is already before them,” he said, dismissing claims of governmental bias.
Morka also referred to previous unguarded accusations from NNPP officials, such as those made by the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, against the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
These accusations, which Gwarzo has since retracted and apologized for, were deemed by Morka as unhelpful in the sensitive context of Kano.
Emphasizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to national unity and peace, Morka stated, “The leader of our Party, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a pan-Nigeria bridge builder for peace, security, and unity in our land, and will not, cannot, must not be directly or remotely tainted with flimsy and unjustifiable allegations of promoting violent crisis in any part of our dear country.”
Morka concluded by urging Kwankwaso to focus on exploring peaceful solutions to the royal impasse in Kano rather than inciting strife.
He called for calm in Kano State, stressing that the people deserve to live in peace, unity, and security as the nation awaits a resolution to the crisis
