The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has upheld the conviction of former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank, Robert Orya, over a N2.4bn fraud case.
The appellate court affirmed the conviction and sentence imposed on Orya by the Federal Capital Territory High Court on all 49 counts filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The EFCC disclosed the development in a statement on Tuesday.
Orya was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on each of the 49 counts, bringing the total sentence to 490 years. The sentences, however, were ordered to run concurrently.
The former NEXIM Bank boss was convicted on February 5, 2026, by the FCT High Court in Abuja after Justice F.E. Messiri found him guilty of offences bordering on obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and advance fee fraud.
The charges were linked to alleged fraudulent loans disbursed by NEXIM Bank during Orya’s tenure as managing director.
According to the EFCC, the prosecution called seven witnesses during the trial and successfully established its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The anti-graft agency had arraigned Orya in 2021 following investigations into alleged financial improprieties involving transactions conducted while he was at the helm of the export-import bank.
With the latest judgment, the Court of Appeal has affirmed the trial court’s findings and the 490-year cumulative sentence imposed on the former bank chief.
Orya served as NEXIM Bank’s managing director from 2009 to 2016. He was first appointed on August 14, 2009, by the administration of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua and was reappointed on August 18, 2014, by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
