The Bauchi State Police Command has detained a 33-year-old housewife over the alleged killing of her co-wife during a domestic incident at Tafawa Balewa Housing Estate, Bauchi metropolis.
The suspect, whose identity was withheld by the police, was detained on Sunday, September 27, following the incident in which her co-wife, the first wife of their husband, allegedly sustained a fatal head injury.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Bauchi State, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
According to him, the incident occurred at about 4:05pm after the Police C-Division, Bauchi, received information about a domestic confrontation between the two women, who lived in the same household.
Habib said preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect, who is the second wife, allegedly struck the first wife on the forehead with a pestle.
He said the victim fell unconscious following the alleged attack and was subsequently rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi, where she was certified dead by a medical doctor.
The police spokesman said the victim’s remains had been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
“Upon receipt of the report, detectives attached to C-Division immediately mobilised to the scene.
“The scene was documented, and the victim was rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi, where she was certified dead by a medical doctor. The corpse has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy,” Habib said.
The police also recovered the pestle allegedly used in the attack as part of the evidence being examined in the investigation.
Habib said the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, had ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation and prosecution.
The commissioner expressed condolences to the bereaved family while cautioning residents against resorting to violence in resolving domestic disputes.
Aliyu also urged families to seek timely medical and psychosocial support for relatives experiencing mental health challenges.
The police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the inthe cident were ongoing.
