A high-ranking Boko Haram Deputy Commander, Awana Alhaji Mele Keremi, along with nine others, has surrendered to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Chief Military Information Officer of MNJTF, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, disclosed this in a statement to newsmen in Maiduguri on Monday.

According to Osoba, Keremi, a notorious figure within the Boko Haram ranks, was closely associated with a prominent commander of the terrorist group and was actively involved in several terrorist operations along the Monguno-Baga axis.

“In a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in the Lake Chad region, a high-ranking Boko Haram Deputy Commander, identified as Awana Alhaji Mele Keremi, has surrendered to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Cross Kauwa,” the statement read.

“Keremi, who served as the right-hand man to a notorious Boko Haram commander, confessed to his involvement in numerous terrorist operations along the Monguno-Baga axis, providing valuable intelligence to the authorities.”

The statement emphasized that the surrender of Keremi and the successful disposal of explosive devices in the area represent significant strides in the MNJTF’s campaign against terrorism.

The MNJTF, a military coalition involving Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger, has been at the forefront of the fight against Boko Haram and its splinter groups, aiming to restore peace and stability in the region.

In a related development, MNJTF troops also welcomed the surrender of Babagoni Modu and a family of eight who managed to escape from a Boko Haram camp in Marte.

Modu, a former member of the terrorist group, reportedly fled the camp due to disillusionment with the group’s violent activities.

The escaping family, which included two women, four men, and two children, recounted their harrowing experiences under Boko Haram’s control before their daring escape.
