The Ogun State Branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) is set to receive material and technical support from the China Red Cross Society following a high-level visit by a Chinese delegation.
The visit, which took place on March 6, 2025 was aimed at strengthening humanitarian collaboration, focused on disaster response, medical aid, and capacity building in the state.
Led by Commissioner Siang Liangjie from Zhejiang Province, the Chinese delegation pledged assistance in key areas, including the donation of medical equipment, provision of educational materials, and advanced disaster preparedness training.
The NRCS Ogun team, led by its Chairman, Dr. Ibrahim Jide Bello, welcomed the partnership, emphasizing its potential to enhance emergency response efforts.
Speaking during the meeting, Commissioner Siang Liangjie reaffirmed the China Red Cross Society’s commitment to humanitarian intervention in Ogun State, particularly in Ogere, where Chinese firms have a strong presence.
He stressed the importance of direct engagement with the Ogun Red Cross to ensure transparent and effective support.
He outlined critical areas for collaboration, including: donation of medical supplies to aid healthcare interventions, capacity building for Red Cross personnel, disaster response training using modern technology,and identification of additional support areas for sustainable impact
The visit follows discussions between the Chinese and Nigerian governments in 2024, where humanitarian cooperation was prioritized.
Dr. Bello, in his address, lauded the China Red Cross Society’s intervention, stating that additional support would expand the branch’s capacity to respond to emergencies such as disease outbreaks and natural disasters.
He highlighted ongoing efforts, including support for displaced persons and responses to cholera and Mpox outbreaks.
He also made an urgent appeal for a permanent Red Cross building in Ogun State, noting that the branch currently operates from a rented space.
He further requested utility vehicles and ambulances to improve emergency response capabilities.
The Ologere of Ogere Kingdom, Oba James Obafemi Saliu, who accompanied the Chinese delegation, commended the collaboration, emphasizing that channeling interventions through the Ogun Red Cross would ensure transparency and accountability.
In response, Miss Xiao May of the China Red Cross advised the NRCS Ogun State Branch to formally document its needs for submission to their organization, signaling a potential framework for sustained cooperation.
The visit marks a crucial step in Ogun State’s humanitarian development, with both Red Cross branches poised to strengthen disaster preparedness, healthcare support, and community resilience.
The NRCS Ogun State Branch anticipates further engagement with the China Red Cross Society to translate commitments into tangible support.
