In a compelling address to the Nigerian public, Ms. YAN Yuqing, the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, refuted claims of Taiwan’s right to join the United Nations.

Ms. Yan emphasized the historical ties between Taiwan and China, the global recognition of the One-China principle, and China’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ms. Yan laid out the historical foundation for China’s claims to Taiwan, highlighting its ancient ties and a legacy of Chinese governance dating back centuries.

Taiwan’s status as part of China’s territory was affirmed through various historical records, from early settlements to Qing Dynasty administrative bodies.

She further emphasized that Taiwan’s return to Chinese sovereignty was established through international documents, including the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation.

These milestones, along with Japan’s surrender in 1945, solidified China’s legal claim to Taiwan.

Ms. Yan pointed to the global recognition of the One-China principle, noting that the United Nations had adopted Resolution 2758 in 1971, reaffirming China as the sole representative of China in the UN.

She emphasized that Taiwan lacks the grounds or right to join the UN or any similar international organizations limited to sovereign states.

Third, Ms. YAN expressed China’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, stating that reunification is an unstoppable historical trend.

She also drew parallels with secessionist movements in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of national unity.

Ms. YAN’s statement highlighted the enduring historical ties and international consensus surrounding Taiwan’s status, reinforcing China’s stance on the issue.
