While it might go unnoticed by many, book lovers around the world know that August 9th is an unofficial holiday dedicated to celebrating the joy of reading and literature. It’s National Book Lovers Day, and I’ve been eagerly anticipating it since May 2024.

Let me share a brief summary of how I celebrated Book Lovers Day. First, I picked up a book I had previously set aside and made sure to finish it on August 9th. Afterward, I created a short reel highlighting both classic and contemporary works by African authors, including Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Buchi Emecheta’s The Joys of Motherhood, Amos Tutuola’s The Palm-Wine Drinkard, and Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone.

On the day itself, I attended a book swap event organized at my workplace. The variety of genres and settings in the books on display made it feel like I was traveling the world without leaving my seat. Books are a form of escapism that everyone deserves to experience. Life can be challenging, but a good book at the end of a tough day can make everything better.

How did you spend your August 9th? And how do books help you escape reality? I’d love to hear from you—feel free to shoot me an email at ademigbujiaishat@outlook.com.
