A courtroom in Ilorin witnessed an emotional scene on Friday as Kolawole Mukhtar broke down in tears over a divorce case filed by his wife, Mutiat.
The Area Court was presented with Mutiat’s petition for divorce, custody of their three children, and a maintenance allowance for them.
Mutiat detailed her grievances, explaining that her husband frequently complains and nags.
She stated that he had stopped fulfilling his responsibilities as a husband, including ceasing all sexual relations.
”He stopped performing his responsibilities as a husband to me. We no longer have sex.
“We argue as normal couples do but we always settle our differences. Since we moved to our present location, he married another wife and stopped sleeping with me.
“I am tired of his nagging and waiting every night for him to visit me in my room,” Mutiat lamented.
Kolawole, visibly distressed, tearfully told the court that Mutiat neglects the children’s school homework and refuses to visit his sister, who lives nearby.
“She has moved to her parents’ house five times since I got married to my second wife and I am tired of pleading with her not to go,” he added.
Presiding Judge Ahmed AbdulKadir observed that the issues seemed resolvable but emphasised the need for both parties to remain calm.
He urged them to consider the future and well-being of their children.
“The two parties need to calm down and consider the future of their children if they divorce,” Judge AbdulKadir stated.
The case has been adjourned until July 12 for a report on the potential settlement, providing the couple and their families time to seek a resolution.
