A cyclist lost his life on Monday after colliding with a moving truck at Alausa Bus Stop, near the ‘Radio’ area by Kudirat Abiola Way, along Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Lagos State.

The incident, which caused heavy traffic congestion in the area, was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a statement signed by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the statement, the cyclist was reportedly attempting to manoeuvre from Kudirat Abiola Way towards the ‘Radio’ junction when he collided with a truck bearing registration number BDG 610 YA.

“The cyclist lost control, struck his head violently against the pavement, and died instantly,” the statement read.

Eyewitnesses at the scene alleged that the deceased appeared distracted at the time of the accident.

One witness said, “The cyclist appeared to be on a phone call. He had an earpiece in his ear and was not looking ahead properly.”
Another eyewitness added, “We saw him veer slightly before he hit the truck.”

LASTMA operatives were said to have arrived at the scene promptly, managing the traffic build-up and notifying officers from the Alausa Police Division, who later took over the case. The deceased’s body was subsequently moved to the General Hospital mortuary in Ikeja.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, while commiserating with the family of the deceased, emphasised the importance of road safety and attentiveness, particularly among cyclists.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this profoundly difficult time,” Bakare-Oki said.

He cautioned cyclists against distractions while on the road, stressing the dangers of using phones or earpieces while riding.

“It is essential for cyclists to wear proper protective gear, remain vigilant, and never contest the right of way with fast-moving vehicles,” he said.

Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to ensuring safer roads across Lagos, urging all road users to prioritise safety to prevent avoidable tragedies.
