In a recent initiative to address the pressing issue of drug abuse, Retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), asserted that the rising tide of drug abuse significantly contributes to the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria.
Marwa made these remarks during a sensitization and advocacy program in Abuja, specifically targeting women and youths.
Collaborating with Dr. Aminu Gusau under the WADA platform, the program aimed to shed light on the perils of drug abuse, focusing particularly on the vulnerable demographics of women and youths.
Dr. Ngozi Madubuike, the Director of Drug Demand Reduction at NDLEA, represented Marwa at the event.
Expressing deep concern over the escalating involvement of women and youths in drug abuse, Marwa highlighted the severity of the issue across Nigeria, affecting diverse demographics, including young individuals, females, and those in rural areas.
He stressed the imperative of a united effort from parents, schools, the public, and the youths themselves to combat this pervasive problem.
Emphasizing the pivotal role of youths in societal development, Marwa drew a direct connection between drug abuse and criminal activities such as armed robbery, murder, kidnapping, and banditry.
He urged youths to reject drug abuse, underscoring its detrimental effects on health and future prospects.
“Kidnapping, banditry, rape, armed robbery, among others, are some of the negative consequences of this menace,” Marwa declared.
“It is derailing the peace, progress, and development of our teeming youth and, by extension, the nation.”
Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara commended the organizers for addressing this critical topic, especially in the face of the nation’s current insecurity challenges.
Dr. Aminu Gusau, co-organizer of the program, reiterated the destructive impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities, emphasizing the urgent need for collective efforts to combat this menace.
