Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has exposed and ordered the arrest of six civil servants for allegedly diverting critical documents belonging to the state’s Ministry of Health.
The suspects are accused of attempting to sell materials intended for primary health care centres and general hospitals across the state.
In a video posted on his official Facebook page on Saturday, the governor detailed how he intercepted the suspects.
Nwifuru narrated that while on his way to inspect some projects, he instinctively directed his convoy to reverse into the health ministry’s premises, where he discovered a vehicle being loaded with official documents.
“I was stunned to see that the vehicle was loading up for sale materials meant for our primary health care centres and general hospitals in the state,” the governor said in the video.
“Unfortunately, while we continue to make sincere efforts to meet the needs of our people, some are bent on sabotaging the system and our desires to give our people the best.”
The confiscated materials included non-polio vaccination cards, daily antenatal registers, and child immunisation records.
In a statement on Sunday, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, confirmed that one Ndukwe Ayansi and five others were apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
Uzor revealed that preliminary findings showed the documents were sold without government approval.
The governor’s swift action underscores his administration’s commitment to combating corruption and ensuring accountability within the state’s civil service.
Efforts are ongoing to recover the diverted materials and prevent future occurrences.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has commenced investigations into the matter, with a promise to bring all culprits to justice.
