Egbin Power Plc, one of Africa’s leading power generation companies, has been recognized for its outstanding safety culture, clinching the prestigious “Best in Safety Performance in Power Generation Company” award at the 2024 AfriSafe Awards.

The ceremony, which took place in Livingstone, Zambia, celebrated excellence in safety across the continent, bringing together dignitaries, industry leaders, and safety professionals from over 24 African countries.

Egbin Power’s achievement highlights its implementation of innovative safety initiatives, including the 720 LACEUPS programme, the Technical Safety Colloquium (TSC), and the “What Have You Done for Egbin Station Today” (WHYDFEST) campaigns.

These efforts, aimed at fostering a safety-first workplace, have set a benchmark in the power generation industry.

Speaking at the event, the founder of the AfriSafe Awards, Femi Dasilva, lauded Egbin Power’s dedication to safety. “Egbin Power has redefined safety excellence in Africa’s power generation sector.

This award is a testament to the company’s relentless pursuit of a safe and sustainable working environment,” Dasilva stated.

Egbin Power’s CEO, Mokhtar Bounour, attributed the recognition to the collective efforts of the company’s team.

“This award underscores the commitment and tireless efforts of our board, management, and staff. Safety is not just a priority but a core value embedded in our operations.

Together, we have set a new standard for safety excellence and will continue to strive for a zero-harm workplace,” he said.

Egbin Power further demonstrated its safety commitment during its Annual QHSE Week, themed “Egbin DNA: Building a Culture of Safety and Sustainability in the Workplace.”

The week-long program featured various activities, including family safety moments, aerobics, and practical first-aid and firefighting training sessions led by officials from the Nigerian Red Cross.

The event also hosted the National President of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), High Chief Dr. Stephen Awori Udezi, along with other distinguished safety professionals.

The programme  culminated in a grand finale, during which Egbin Power unveiled a new firefighting truck and honored departments and employees who excelled in upholding safety standards.

The keynote lecture, delivered by Jamiu Badmos of the QHSE Leadership Academy, emphasized sustainable safety culture concepts such as “safetainability” and “safegagement,” reinforcing the importance of integrating safety into organizational operations.

Head of QHSE at Egbin Power, Julius Akpong, reiterated the company’s commitment to safety as a fundamental value.

“We have built a strong safety culture over the years, guided by our core values of Safety, Professionalism, Integrity, Discipline, Commitment to Stakeholders, Environmental Consciousness, and Sustainability (SPICES). Workplace safety is a priority embedded in everything we do,” Akpong said.

The recognition at the AfriSafe Awards and the successful QHSE Week activities underscore Egbin Power’s unwavering dedication to operational excellence, safety, and sustainability in Africa’s energy sector.
