There was drama at All Saints’ Church (Anointed Land), Opopogboro, Ado Ekiti, on Sunday, March 2, as aggrieved worshippers refused to participate in the service, demanding the removal of their vicar, Ven. Oke Olanrewaju, over allegations of poor leadership.
The worshippers, protesting within the church premises, carried placards with inscriptions such as “No to autocracy, we say no to dictators,” and “Ven. Oke Olanrewaju must go.”
They accused the vicar of high-handedness, election interference, and misconduct, insisting that he should be transferred.
The Parish Council Committee (PCC) Secretary, Mr. Adeboyega Falowo, said the congregation was dissatisfied with Olanrewaju’s leadership, citing his controversial handling of a people’s warden election and allegations of physical assault on a church official, Mrs. Omoyeni Oyewole.
A PCC member, Dr. Mobolaji Afolabi, further alleged that the vicar brought a dog into the church premises despite health concerns and engaged in poultry farming, which caused environmental pollution and legal issues.
Efforts by the Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Rt. Rev. Andrew Ajayi, to mediate failed, as the protesting members rejected the senior priest sent to conduct the service.
The bishop eventually placed Olanrewaju on indefinite leave and set up a peace committee.
Confirming the resolution, Afolabi said the vicar had been transferred out of the parish.
“We thank God our demand has been met. Peace has returned, and we have resumed church activities,” he stated.
Olanrewaju also confirmed his transfer but declined to comment further.
