Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has emphasized the necessity for a strategic alliance between the northern and south-south regions of Nigeria to address the nation’s pressing challenges.
This call came during his condolence visit to the family of the late elder statesman Edwin Clark, renowned for his advocacy in the Niger Delta, who passed away on February 17.
El-Rufai highlighted the historical political partnership between the north and south-south in past decades, stressing that reviving this alliance is crucial for the country’s salvation amidst current complexities.
“In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the traditional political partners of the north were the south-south. Let us not forget that. Let us go back to that. Let us save this country because it really requires saving. We need a rescue operation,” he asserted.
Accompanied by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the condolence visit, El-Rufai acknowledged Atiku’s significant role in spearheading economic reforms under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration from 1999 to 2007.
This visit underscores ongoing discussions and strategic meetings among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
El-Rufai’s recent engagements with diverse political figures, including Hamza Al-Mustapha, Shehu Gabam of the Social Democratic Party (PDP), and others, have fueled speculation about potential shifts in his political alignment.
Addressing rumors of a growing divide between himself and the All Progressives Congress (APC), El-Rufai hinted at exploring new political avenues as part of broader coalition-building efforts.
