Kafanchan, Kaduna State – An Upper Customary Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, has handed down a two-year prison sentence to 20-year-old James Monday, an ex-convict, for stealing a television set.

Monday was charged by the police for trespassing into a house and theft, in violation of sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

The case was brought to light on September 3 when the complainant, Ezekiel Danladi, reported the incident to the police.

According to Police Prosecutor Insp. Esther Bishen, Monday was apprehended after unlawfully entering Danladi’s residence in Ungwan VIO, Kafanchan, and making off with a TV set valued at N40,000.

It was revealed in court that the defendant had previously served a jail term in 2021 for a similar offense.

When the charges were read to him, Monday pleaded guilty and appealed to the court for leniency.

In delivering the verdict, Judge Mr. George Gwani imposed a six-month prison sentence or a fine of N5,000 for the first count, and a two-year prison term or a fine of N30,000 for the second count. The judge clarified that both sentences would run concurrently.

This decision underscores the commitment of the justice system to hold individuals accountable for their actions and discourage criminal behavior.
