The Nigeria Sanctions Committee (NSC) has designated Simon Ekpa, a controversial figure linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and 16 entities as alleged terrorism financiers in the country.
This decision was announced following a meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, chaired by Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice.
The NSC, mandated to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolutions on targeted financial sanctions, identified Ekpa among others whose financial activities are now subject to stringent regulatory actions.
The committee has instructed all financial institutions to immediately freeze assets, funds, and economic resources belonging to the designated individuals and entities.
In a statement released post-meeting, the committee listed the names and bank details of the 17 individuals and entities affected by the sanctions.
They emphasized the urgency for financial institutions to comply promptly without prior notice, reporting all frozen assets to the committee’s secretariat.
Simon Ekpa, known for his online presence advocating for Biafran separatism, was highlighted as a prominent figure on the list.
Notably, Ekpa was apprehended in Finland in November 2024 on charges related to disseminating terrorist propaganda via social media.
He remains in custody pending trial scheduled for May 2025.
Among the other entities named in the sanctions list are various individuals and companies allegedly involved in financing activities detrimental to national security interests.
The committee’s directive shows a robust effort to disrupt financial flows supporting terrorism within Nigeria.
Financial institutions are further required to file suspicious transaction reports with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) for comprehensive analysis of flagged activities associated with the sanctioned individuals and entities.
