The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has ordered the suspension of mining activities at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital and surrounding areas following reports of illegal mining operations.
During a meeting with OAU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, and the Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, Prof. John Okeniyi, the minister announced the halt on Tuesday.
The decision came after numerous complaints from students and residents about the adverse effects of illegal mining on the local economy, prompting swift action from the ministry to investigate the matter thoroughly.
Preliminary reports confirmed the presence of mining activities, leading to the immediate suspension of all mining operations pending further investigations.
Dr. Alake disclosed that despite some operators possessing licenses and consent letters, the ministry opted for a comprehensive assessment in collaboration with university authorities to ensure legitimacy.
In response, Prof. Bamire expressed gratitude for the meeting and highlighted the university’s potential to contribute significantly to the mining sector through research and exploration.
He revealed the university’s application for an exploration license, signaling its commitment to leveraging its expertise for sector development.
The meeting, attended by key university officials, emphasized collaboration as a means to promote responsible mining practices and advance the nation’s mining industry.
