The Federal Government has released eight months of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance owed to academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.
The allowance, covering January to August 2026, is expected to provide financial support to lecturers and other eligible academic personnel for the purchase of tools and materials required for teaching, research and related academic duties.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Wednesday while inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation.
Alausa said the release was in line with the provisions of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, adding that tertiary institutions had been directed to begin payment to eligible beneficiaries.
“The full CATA payment has now been released by the Federal Government from January to August 2026 to all universities, all polytechnics and colleges of education,” the minister said.
He added that the payment of the allowance to non-academic staff was also being processed.
CATA is designed to assist academic staff in meeting some of the material and professional demands associated with teaching, research and other academic responsibilities.
The minister described the release as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the welfare of workers in the tertiary education sector and strengthen the country’s education system.
He said the administration was also investing in infrastructure across tertiary institutions, while implementing interventions in basic and postgraduate education.
Alausa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the quality of education and ensuring that Nigerian children have access to an education system capable of meeting international standards.
The latest payment is expected to provide some relief for academic staff who have continued to demand improved welfare and better working conditions in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
