Abdulbasit Oyeyemi, the best graduating student of the Faculty of Agriculture at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, defied challenges to emerge with a remarkable CGPA of 4.78. In this interview with KOREDE BADMUS, he shares his journey, the sacrifices behind his success, and his vision for transforming agriculture in Nigeria.
Congratulations on your outstanding achievement! How does it feel to be the best graduating student in the Faculty of Agriculture at Usmanu Danfodiyo University?
I’m deeply grateful for this achievement, and I acknowledge that it’s all by the grace of God (Alhamdulillah). My journey was filled with setbacks and tough times, but also moments of growth and learning. It has been a bittersweet experience, with both smooth and rough patches, but I’m thankful for it all.
What inspired you to pursue a degree in Soil Science and Land Resources Management?
I chose Soil Science and Land Resources Management because I found the field fascinating. Many people overlook it, but I believe it’s the backbone of agriculture. People assume agriculture is just about animals or crops, but soil is the foundation for all life. By managing soil properly, we can have a significant impact on food security and the environment.
Maintaining a First-Class with a CGPA of 4.78 is no small feat. What were your study habits and strategies?
Maintaining a high CGPA is stressful, but when you’re at the top, there’s no room for complacency—anything less than an A-grade can pull you back. My friends and I adopted a disciplined study habit. We didn’t just cram for exams; we studied consistently and prepared for impromptu tests. We attended all lectures, engaged in night reading, and ensured we fully understood every course.
Did you ever face moments of doubt or academic struggles? How did you overcome them?
Yes, my third year was the toughest. In my faculty, failing more than eight credit units meant repeating the entire year. The workload was overwhelming—lectures ran from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed by night classes. There were times I struggled despite my best efforts. It was difficult, but I kept pushing forward.
Was there a particular course or professor who had a significant impact on your academic journey?
Most of our lecturers were incredibly supportive. They didn’t just teach; they mentored and guided us to become better individuals. Their encouragement kept me going.
Can you share a memorable experience from your time at the university?
Studying in the North comes with its challenges, especially the weather. However, I enjoyed activities like fitness walks, hikes, and association events. These moments helped me stay balanced despite the academic pressure.
Many students struggle with distractions and academic pressure. How did you stay disciplined and focused?
First, it was the grace of God. Secondly, most of us came from faraway states to study in the North, and we were determined to make our journey worthwhile. My friends and I knew we had to excel to make our families proud.
Were there financial or personal challenges you had to navigate while in school?
Of course. Who doesn’t go broke in school? There were times when I had nothing, and garri was my only meal. Some days were tough, but looking back, I realize it was all worth it.
How did you balance academics with extracurricular activities and social life?
Time management was key. I ensured every hour of my day was used wisely. Whenever I participated in extracurricular activities, I compensated by dedicating extra hours to studying.
What contributions do you hope to make in agriculture and land management?
As a Soil Science graduate, I want to collaborate with government agencies and NGOs to empower farmers and agripreneurs. My goal is to educate people on optimal fertilizer use and land resource management, ensuring sustainability in agriculture.
If you could go back to your first year, is there anything you would do differently?
Yes, I would build stronger relationships with my professors earlier. I managed to connect with them towards the end of my studies, but I wish I had done that sooner.
What advice would you give to students aspiring to graduate with First-Class Honours?
First, pray for guidance and strength. Then, be committed, work hard, and stay consistent. Consistency is what makes the difference between average and excellent students.
