The group known as Southern Nigeria Youth Congress has vehemently endorsed the candidature of Senator Godswill Akpabio for the Senate Presidency, describing him as eminently qualified to occupy the number three office on behalf of the people of South-South Nigeria.
Briefing the press in Asaba, Delta State, the President General of the group, Comrade Emordi Ugochukwu Caleb affirmed that it was the strong belief of the Youth group to throw their weight behind Akpabio, just as he said that no Senator from the South-South region of Nigeria had ever held that office.
According to him, “On National Assembly leadership, we wish to reiterate that it is the turn of the South-South to produce a Senate President. We are calling on all elected Senators from Southern Nigeria and other regions to support a South-South Senate President in the spirit of fair play.
“For those bringing up the argument that the Senate Presidency should go to the North because His Excellency, President Tinubu is from the South-West, may we remind them that the 8 years of the Immediate Past President, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari saw Senator Saraki and Ahmed Lawan from the North as Senate Presidents.
“It is therefore only right for the position to now rotate to South-South, and we believe that His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio is best qualified, experienced, and possessing of the needed capacity to effectively perform as a Senate President. We, therefore, pass a vote of confidence on His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio for the exalted office of the Senate President.
“We also encourage every elected member of the House of Representatives from Southern Nigeria to support a Northern Speakership bid for equity and fairness, while we call on all Nigerians to support South Eastern Nigeria for the Deputy Speaker in the spirit of inclusivity”, he submitted.
