Thursday morning witnessed chaos at the Abbey Hostel in Ode Remo, a residence for students from Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade.
A fierce gun battle unfolded between the state police command operatives and four suspected robbers, resulting in the death of one assailant.
Around 1:30 am on Thursday, the armed robbers infiltrated the hostel, robbing students of their mobile phones and electronic devices.
A source in the area, fearing victimization, revealed the harrowing experience faced by the students.
Amidst the ongoing robbery, a quick-thinking resident alerted the police, prompting an anti-crime patrol team’s dispatch to the hostel.
In response, the suspected robbers opened fire on the approaching officers, leading to a confrontation. During the exchange, one of the robbers was fatally shot.
Confirming the incident, Omolola Odutola, the state Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed that the remaining three suspects fled with injuries.
The police recovered a bag containing stolen items, including five iPhones, a Techno phone, a wristwatch, an iPod, and a power bank. Efforts are underway to apprehend the escaping suspects.
This incident adds to the growing security concerns around the polytechnic and student hostels in Saapade.
In December 2023, a student named Segun lost his life in a similar robbery, while sporadic shootings and assaults occurred in November 2023 during another attack on students’ hostels.
The authorities are urged to address the escalating security issues in the area.
