Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has attributed his decision not to own houses abroad to his commitment to industrialising Nigeria.
Speaking at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, Dangote emphasised that properties in London or the United States would detract from his mission to transform Nigeria into an industrial hub.
“The reason I don’t have a London or American house is solely because I wanted to focus on industrialisation in Nigeria,” Dangote stated.
“I figured that if I had those houses, there would be one reason or the other for me to visit those places, thereby causing distraction for me.”
He further expressed his dedication to the Nigerian dream, noting that aside from his residence in Lagos, he only owns another house in his home state, Kano, and a rented property in Abuja.
Echoing her father’s sentiments, Fatima Dangote, Group Executive Director of Commercial Operations, lauded her father’s relentless work ethic and dedication.
“I have not seen anyone as hardworking as my father. Sometimes I wonder how he never gives up. I wish we had a few more men like my father in Nigeria. The country will be a better place,” she remarked.
In a related development, the Group CEO disclosed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) now holds a reduced stake in the Dangote refinery.
Initially owning a 20% stake, NNPC’s share has dwindled to 7.2% due to their failure to meet financial obligations by June.
“NNPC no longer owns a 20% stake in the Dangote refinery. They were meant to pay their balance in June but have yet to fulfil the obligations.
“Now, they only own a 7.2% stake in the refinery,” the CEO explained
