Former Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka, has shared a harrowing account of his close call with death, detailing his last meeting with the late Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings PLC, Herbert Wigwe.
The poignant narrative unfolds against the backdrop of their scheduled meeting last Thursday.
In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Chidoka revealed how he pleaded with Wigwe to take him along on his frequent overseas trips.
“We had an appointment for last Thursday. ‘Osita, I will fly into Abuja with the VC on Thursday; after our meeting, I will leave for the US,'” Chidoka recounted.
Expressing his desire to accompany Wigwe, Chidoka jokingly said, “Herbert, wetin dey pursue you, you travel a lot these days, biko take me along.”
Wigwe, with a smile, responded, “Osita, you can’t keep up with my pace. Just enjoy your peace.”
Their laughter and lighthearted goodbyes became unexpectedly profound as it marked their final exchange.
The anticipated Thursday meeting never took place, leaving Chidoka grappling with the sudden loss of a friend and supporter since his exit from public office.
Reflecting on their long-standing connection, he shared, “Since I left public office, he has been a strong supporter and friend.
His wife Chizoba was at my wedding 22 years ago. His son looked up to me as his parents literally handed him over to me for mentorship.”
Chidoka, now mourning the tragic demise of Wigwe, his wife, and son in a helicopter crash, questions the fragility of life.
“I am alone in the dark, wondering, is that it? Should we remain fearless? Somebody should tell me something.”
Meanwhile, investigations into the helicopter crash, which also claimed the life of former Group Chairman Abimbola Ogunbanjo and two crew members, reveal that wintry weather conditions were among the factors contributing to the ill-fated incident.
The aviation community grapples with the loss of these prominent figures, underscoring the unpredictable nature of life and the impact of profound connections.
