The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has taken a decisive step towards enhancing the effectiveness, transparency, and accountability of firearms licensing and regulations within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, on Monday, September 11, 2023, it was revealed that the IGP has established an ad hoc committee for this purpose.
The newly formed committee will conduct a thorough assessment of the current firearms licensing procedures and regulations.
To ensure a well-informed review, the police will collaborate with various stakeholders, including legal experts, civil society organizations, and specialists in the field.
IGP Egbetokun, driven by his commitment to combat all forms of insecurity in the nation, has issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the unlawful possession of arms and light weapons.
He emphasized the grave threat that the illegal proliferation of firearms and light weapons poses to Nigeria’s peace and stability.
In response to this threat, the Nigeria Police Force is determined to crack down on the illegal fabrication, sale, possession, and use of arms.
It is stressed that possessing firearms without the appropriate licenses and permits not only violates the law but also endangers society.
The IGP assured that those engaged in these illegal activities will be pursued and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Furthermore, IGP Egbetokun has directed all State Commissioners of Police and supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in charge of Zonal Commands, as well as tactical squads, to initiate a comprehensive crackdown on the illegal fabrication, sale, possession, and use of prohibited firearms throughout the country.
The IGP called upon all Nigerians to promptly report any suspicious activities related to firearms to their local police divisions or via the various NPF social media platforms for immediate response.
The Nigeria Police Force remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the nation
