Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has made an urgent plea to President Bola Tinubu, requesting the deployment of drones to monitor and secure the state’s extensive borders.
The governor’s appeal was made during a private meeting with the President at the State House in Abuja.
Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting, Governor Otu highlighted the significant security challenges facing Cross River State, particularly along its borders. He emphasized the need for advanced surveillance technology to combat the increasing threat of insecurity.
“Actually, I met with Mr. President about security and boundary issues in my state,” Governor Otu explained. “I believe that the meeting will still continue because a few things will need some other officials also to participate.”
Governor Otu detailed the expansive nature of Cross River State’s borders, noting that they stretch for approximately 500 to 600 kilometers. Currently, only four military platforms are positioned along this extensive boundary, which the governor insists is insufficient for effective security management.
“Cross River State boundaries are quite very big. You can drive about five to 600 kilometers along the boundary,” he said. “In between those boundaries, we just have about four military platforms. I’m trying to tell Mr. President that we do need more, and we do need some high-level security more than what we have now. Additionally, we need drones to fly over the area to make it safe.”
The governor’s call for drones is part of a broader strategy to enhance security and ensure the safety of residents and properties in the state. By leveraging drone technology, the state aims to improve surveillance, gather real-time intelligence, and respond swiftly to security threats.
Governor Otu’s meeting with President Tinubu underscores the urgency of addressing security issues in Cross River State, as well as the need for federal support to implement effective solutions.
As the state grapples with border security challenges, the deployment of drones could represent a significant step forward in safeguarding its boundaries and enhancing overall security.
