The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has set the cut-off mark for university admissions at 140, while polytechnics and colleges of education will have a minimum of 100 for the 2024 academic session.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that this decision was made public on Thursday during the annual policy meeting on admissions held at the Body of Benchers, Headquarters, Abuja.
The National Minimum Tolerable UTME Score (NTMUS), commonly referred to as the cut-off mark, was determined during this crucial meeting, which follows the successful administration of the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that a total of 1,989,668 candidates registered for this year’s UTME, of which 80,810 were absent, leaving 1,904,189 candidates who sat for the examination over six days.
Chaired by the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, the policy meeting gathered recommendations from heads of various institutions before finalising the cut-off marks.
JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, clarified that while institutions could set higher minimum benchmarks than those approved at the meeting, they could not go below the established cut-off marks.
“The policy meeting on education is an annual event that authorises the commencement of admissions into tertiary institutions in the country,” Oloyede noted, emphasising the importance of maintaining standards across the board.
