In a landmark decision, Chief Judge Justice Dije Aboki of the Kano State High Court pronounced the death sentence by hanging for five members of a vigilance group.
The conviction stemmed from their involvement in the extrajudicial killing of 17-year-old Ahmed Musa.
The convicted individuals, Emmanuel Korau, Elisha Ayuba, Irimiya Timothy, Auwalu Jafar, and Mustapha Haladu, were affiliated with the Sani Abacha Youth Centre.
Lamido Dinki, the prosecution lead counsel, outlined that the gruesome incident occurred on January 22, 2022, at Sabon Titi, Panshekara, Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state.
According to Dinki, the defendants, armed with a long wooden club, viciously attacked Musa as he crossed Sabon Titi, Panshekara Road.
Attempting to evade the assault, Musa suffered stab wounds to his neck, was dragged on the ground, and forcibly taken away in a tricycle.
Despite efforts to seek medical help, the victim succumbed to his injuries, confirmed dead on arrival at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano.
The prosecution argued that the actions of the vigilante group contravened Sections 97 and 221(b) of the Penal Code.
The defence, led by Ahmad Muhammad, asserted that the group had approached Musa for arrest based on a lodged complaint.
However, Justice Aboki, commending the prosecution for a thorough case presentation, found the evidence beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the five defendants to death by hanging.
