The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has sounded the alarm on Nigeria’s escalating banditry crisis, attributing it to the government’s failure to prioritize youth education.

Kukah said this in a speech delivered on Friday, at the 42nd Actualisation four-day conference of Rotary International, District 9110 held  in Abeokuta.

He urged the urgent need for educational investment to curb the rising tide of insecurity plaguing the nation.

He cautioned that without swift action, the situation would only deteriorate further, with fears of bandits and Boko Haram gripping the populace.

Highlighting the staggering number of Nigerian children deprived of education, Kukah painted a grim picture of the future if immediate measures are not taken.

He called upon philanthropists, religious organizations, and humanitarian groups to join forces in combating illiteracy, emphasizing the indispensable role of education in ensuring national security.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo echoed Kukah’s sentiments in a pre-recorded video message, urging the Rotary club to redouble its efforts in serving humanity.

He urged participants to seize the conference opportunity to renew their commitment to uplifting the less privileged and making a positive impact on society.

District Governor Ifeyinwa Ejezie highlighted the Rotary club’s initiatives in various areas, including basic education, maternal and child health, economic empowerment, and mental health awareness.

She reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to addressing societal challenges comprehensively.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s security crisis has prompted widespread concern, with stakeholders demanding decisive action from the Federal Government.

Borno State House of Representatives member Ahmed Jaha recently called for the enlistment of military mercenaries to confront the nation’s security challenges head-on, signaling the urgency of the situation.
