In a decisive move against illicit activities within its metropolis, the Lagos State Government has successfully apprehended 11 individuals posing as enforcement personnel and extorting money from motorists.
The arrests took place along Ibeju-Lekki Junction and the Dangote Refinery area in Akodo.
The perpetrators, claiming to operate under the guise of Local Government, were identified as Ajakori Lukman, Maroof Kewusola, Shakiru Aguda, Oseni Taiwo, Sunday Lukky, Olamilekan Alade, Ibrahim Akeem, Amoranbini Tanmola, Omotayo Fatai, Olanrawaju Shehu, and Aliu Ibrahim.
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, denounced the false claims of working for the Local Government by the fake enforcement personnel, declaring their actions illegal and unacceptable.
Osiyemi emphasized that their activities were exacerbating the economic challenges in the country and causing undue hardship to motorists.
The Transportation Commissioner affirmed the Ministry’s awareness of similar activities across the state and assured the public that further arrests would be made.
He stressed that these actions were tarnishing the administration’s efforts to address prevailing challenges.
Backing the Commissioner’s statements, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olawale Musa, disclosed that the arrests followed numerous complaints and petitions about the illegal activities of faceless miscreants along the corridor.
Musa clarified that agencies such as the Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were legally empowered to oversee traffic management and monitoring.
Musa announced that the apprehended fake enforcers would be charged to court and prosecuted.
He urged Lagosians to collaborate with the government by reporting any illegal transport enforcement activities to the Ministry, assuring continued efforts to rid the roads of fake enforcers.
Issuing a stern warning, Musa cautioned others engaged in extortion to cease their activities before facing the full force of government intervention.
