The Lagos State Police Command has initiated legal action against the organisers of an upcoming event, the Global Property Conference, for allegedly using the name and image of the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ishola, without authorization.
The event is scheduled to hold on November 9, 2024, at the Landmark Event Centre on Victoria Island, Lagos.
According to a statement released by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command was not informed or involved in the conference, despite the promotional flyer displaying CP Ishola’s name and picture as a supposed guest.
Hundeyin described the flyer as “the handiwork of mischief makers,” and urged the public to disregard any perceived affiliation between the police commissioner and the event.
The statement read in part, “The Lagos State Police Command wishes to alert the general public that the Command is not aware of a programme tagged Global Property Conference, whose flyer carries the name and picture of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olanrewaju Ishola, psc+, mnips.
The Command hereby confirms that the flyer is the handiwork of mischief makers planning to use the name and picture of the Commissioner of Police to confer legitimacy and endorsement on the said programme.”
The conference, listed under the direction of Dr. Stephen Akintayo as convener, allegedly sought to use the commissioner’s name and image to lend the event credibility, a move that the Lagos police deem deceptive and unlawful.
The Command has confirmed that legal measures are underway to address the incident.
Attempts by media outlet SaharaReporters to reach the organisers for a response were unsuccessful, as calls to the numbers listed on the flyer reportedly went unanswered.
The Lagos State Police Command has reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding the commissioner’s name from unauthorized use and warns event organisers against similar attempts to mislead the public by associating the Command with unapproved events.
