The Ogun communities of Obada-Oko are currently engulfed in a land grabbing crisis that has led to a state of anxiety and fear among residents.
The Chairman of the Council of Baales for Obada Oko Ward 10, High Chief Adewunmi Gbenga Matthew, has accused one notorious land grabber (name withheld) of terrorising and encroaching on lands in five communities within the area.
During an interview with PLATFORM TIMES in Abeokuta on Sunday, High Chief Adewunmi detailed the escalating situation, which has persisted for approximately two weeks.
The affected communities include Elediye village, Bolaji Village, Ijeja Ojurin village, Sorobi village, and Opelifa village.
“The land grabbers have been disrupting the peace, preventing residents from working on their lands, and harassing block industry operators in the area,” Adewunmi stated.
He emphasized that the crisis has become so severe that residents are unable to sleep at night due to fear and anxiety.
Adewunmi also alleged that the land grabbers are using police officers from Lagos Zone 2 to intimidate the community.
According to him, the Obada police station has refused to intervene, claiming they lack jurisdiction over the matter.
This has left the residents feeling helpless and exposed to further threats and harassment.
In light of these events, Adewunmi has called on the Ogun State Government and the House of Assembly to intervene urgently.
He urged the authorities to help resolve the crisis and prevent potential bloodshed.
“The community has no connection with man, who claims his father owned Obada town,” Adewunmi clarified, disputing Oladunjoye’s claims to the land.
This crisis has drawn attention to a broader issue within the state.
Notably, the Ogun State House of Assembly had previously summoned Chief Mutairu Owoeye on August 27, 2021, regarding similar allegations of land grabbing.
In a statement signed by the Clerk of the House, Mr. ‘Deji Adeyemo, the assembly warned that failure to comply with the summons could lead to the invocation of Section 129 of the 1999 Constitution, which grants the legislature the power to compel the attendance of any person in Nigeria.
