A 25-year-old woman, Kehinde Onizeokaraga, has allegedly been killed by her husband, Sodiq Ibrahim, a meat seller, during a dispute over their troubled marriage in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday when attempts by family members and acquaintances to mediate in the couple’s marital disagreement allegedly degenerated into a violent confrontation.
Ibrahim, who is said to be from Kogi State alongside his late wife, reportedly fled the scene after the incident and was still at large as of Thursday.
A family member and cousin of the deceased, Yussuf Lawrence, said Kehinde had previously left her matrimonial home following unresolved disagreements with her husband.
Lawrence said efforts had recently been made to reconcile the couple, but that the deceased was uncomfortable with some of the attempts.
According to him, Kehinde was preparing to leave Ado Ekiti on Wednesday when she was invited to the residence of a friend of her father, who reportedly wanted to see her.
He said she went to the residence without knowing that her husband would also be there.
Lawrence explained that the meeting, which was intended to resolve the marital dispute, subsequently turned violent, with Ibrahim allegedly attacking Kehinde with a machete.
He said the injuries sustained during the attack proved fatal.
The deceased’s body was subsequently deposited at a mortuary, while the suspect reportedly fled the scene.
Lawrence expressed the family’s grief over the incident and called on the police to intensify efforts to arrest the suspect and ensure that justice was served.
He also alleged that Ibrahim fled with Kehinde’s mobile phone, which he said the family believed could contain information relevant to the investigation.
“We want Sadiq (Ibrahim) to be found and arrested. We want justice for Kehinde. Her parents are in pain and my family is in serious agony. She didn’t deserve this,” Lawrence said.
The family member further alleged that some individuals had been taken into police custody in connection with the incident.
However, details of their identities and the nature of their alleged involvement were not immediately disclosed.
Confirming the incident, the Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, said the Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, had ordered a thorough investigation.
Abutu said the police command was working to apprehend the alleged perpetrator and bring him to justice.
“The Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure that the perpetrator is apprehended and brought to justice,” the PPRO stated.
The police confirmation means the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is ongoing, while the suspect remains wanted..
