Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has issued a stern warning to civil servants on strike in the state, threatening dismissal and immediate replacement for those who fail to resume work within 72 hours.
Nwifuru’s ultimatum follows a seven-day warning strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ebonyi State chapter, over the non-implementation of the new minimum wage.
Addressing journalists on Monday at the Centenary City Government House in Abakaliki, the governor insisted that the state is not indebted to any worker and has already approved and commenced payment of a N75,000 minimum wage.
“If you don’t go to work, not only will I stop your salary, but I will also replace you within 72 hours. Consider yourself sacked if you are absent from your office,” Nwifuru declared.
The governor directed commissioners and heads of government agencies to ensure full compliance, stating that attendance records would be strictly monitored and salaries would be paid only to those present at their duty posts.
“I have instructed the Civil Service Commission chairman and all commissioners to record attendance in their offices.
“Payment will be done through table payment, based on the number of days worked,” he said.
The NLC in Ebonyi State began its strike on Sunday, demanding full implementation of the new minimum wage across the state’s workforce.
However, Governor Nwifuru maintained that the government had fulfilled its obligations, urging workers to prioritize their responsibilities.
“So far, I am not guilty. I am not owing you. According to the agreement and the Constitution, I am meeting my obligations. If you refuse to work, forget about the state government,” he added.
The governor’s firm stance signals heightened tensions between the state government and its workforce, with the NLC yet to issue a formal response to the ultimatum.
