NAFDAC Warns Bakeries Against Use Of Saccharine, Bromate In Bread

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned bakeries across the country against the use of harmful chemicals such as saccharine and bromate in bread production.

The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, issued the warning while speaking during a News Forum programme, emphasizing the stringent measures in place to curb such practices.

According to Adeyeye, bakeries found culpable of using these banned substances would face severe sanctions, including shutdowns.

“This is where our post-marketing surveillance comes in,” she said. “We go out routinely to inspect certain products, sometimes based on complaints received through our reform office.”

Highlighting the agency’s enforcement actions, Adeyeye revealed that several bakeries have been shut down for using bromate in bread production.

“If we discover or suspect that bread contains bromate, we immediately close the bakery. This is non-negotiable,” she added.

NAFDAC has also taken similar actions against water-producing factories operating under substandard or unhygienic conditions.

“Our Regulatory Inspection Directorate plays a critical role in ensuring compliance,” the NAFDAC boss explained. “It helps us confirm that the products initially registered with us maintain the same standards in the market. Some manufacturers alter their production process after securing approval, which is unacceptable.”

Adeyeye stressed the importance of post-marketing surveillance to maintain public health and safety.

“It ensures that what they submitted to us during registration remains consistent in the market. This is essential for upholding quality and standard,” she concluded.

NAFDAC has reiterated its commitment to enforcing market control and maintaining strict monitoring of food production practices across the country.
