NCAA Denies Shutting Down Ibadan Airport Amidst Upgrade Plans

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has clarified recent reports claiming the shutdown of Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, dismissing them as inaccurate.

This clarification follows misconceptions arising from a social media post by Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA.

Achimugu’s post initially indicated a potential six-month closure of the airport starting March for maintenance and upgrade purposes, pending further developments.

However, he expressed dismay over how his statement was misrepresented in the media.

“I don’t understand how any journalist would take this post and caption it, ‘NCAA shuts down Ibadan Airport.’ My post never said so,” Achimugu emphasized.

Contrary to the misreported shutdown, the Oyo State Government has outlined plans for a comprehensive upgrade of the airport facilities.

Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, revealed that the proposed closure aligns with the state’s strategy to enhance aviation infrastructure.

This initiative marks the second phase of improvements following the commencement of initial upgrades in 2023, focusing on runway enhancements, airport lighting, and fire safety.

Governor Seyi Makinde stressed the significance of these developments during a groundbreaking ceremony last September.

He outlined ambitious plans for a new international terminal and additional infrastructure as part of the airport’s modernization efforts.

The clarification from NCAA underscores ongoing efforts to modernize aviation facilities across Nigeria, ensuring improved safety and service standards for air travelers.

The agency urges the public and media outlets to verify information before dissemination to avoid unnecessary confusion.L
