The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) recently concluded its 2024 Summer Camp, a three-week event themed “Eco-Adventure Challenge,” held at the Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC) from August 12th to 30th.
The camp, designed for children aged 5 to 17, attracted over 100 participants, offering them an immersive, educational experience in one of Nigeria’s most cherished natural habitats.
The camp aimed to foster environmental awareness and sustainability in young minds, combining fun-filled adventures with practical lessons on conservation.
The activities included nature walks, wildlife exploration, canopy walk adventures, sustainability workshops, eco-arts and crafts, and leadership challenges.
Nature Walks and Canopy Walk Adventures Children explored the diverse ecosystems of LCC through guided nature walks, encountering various wildlife species such as monkeys, rare birds, and century-old tortoises.
A key highlight was the 401-metre canopy walkway—the longest in Africa—offering breathtaking views of the surrounding environment.
Sustainability and Creative Workshops The children participated in workshops focused on recycling, waste management, tree planting, and eco-friendly living.
They also engaged in creative activities, crafting art from recycled materials and participating in hands-on eco-friendly projects like tie-dyeing with natural dyes, including hibiscus leaves and onion peels.
Leadership and Environmental Education Team-building challenges and leadership activities allowed participants to develop critical life skills, while expert-led discussions covered important topics like climate change and wildlife conservation.
These sessions aimed to equip the children with practical knowledge on global environmental issues, inspiring them to become future environmental stewards.
Camp Impact and Praise from Parents The success of the camp was evident from the feedback received.
A parent who has brought her children for three years expressed her satisfaction with the programme, noting the positive growth in her children’s appreciation of nature.
“I’ve seen a lot of progress in my children’s understanding of environmental issues. I am grateful to NCF for making this programme free and urge other parents to support this initiative,” she said.
NCF’s Director General, Dr. Joseph Onoja, hailed the camp’s success: “Our mission was to offer these young participants a memorable outdoor experience while imparting practical knowledge to inspire environmental action. We are proud of the impact and are planning for future editions.”
One participant, Tammy from Covenant Hall Schools, shared her excitement about attending the camp for the second year.
“The activities here are extremely engaging, and I’ve learned life skills that I can use in the future. I look forward to attending again next year.”
Looking Ahead The 2024 Eco-Adventure Challenge highlights NCF’s commitment to engaging the younger generation in conservation efforts.
The foundation is already planning future editions to continue promoting eco-awareness and sustainability.
