The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially unveiled the results of the 2023 Internal Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), revealing that an impressive 61.60 percent of candidates achieved five credits and above, including English and Mathematics.
However, amid this achievement, NECO also exposed a troubling issue, revealing that a total of 93 schools have been implicated in mass cheating during the exams.
Also, it was disclosed that 52 supervisors have been recommended for blacklisting due to their role in poor supervision, aiding, and abetting during the examinations.
The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NECO, Professor Dantani Wushishi, made this revelation during the results announcement.
He emphasized that these erring schools would be summoned for discussions with the Council, and appropriate sanctions would be applied.
Giving statistics, he said a staggering 1,196,985 candidates, comprising 616,398 males and 580,587 females, sat for the examinations.
Notably, 1,543 candidates with special needs also participated in the exams.
Wushishi provided further insight into the candidates with special needs, stating, “Among them are 913 candidates with hearing impairment, 162 candidates with visual impairment, 103 candidates with albinism, 61 candidates with autism, 149 candidates with low vision, and 154 candidates with adermatoglyphia, a condition where candidates have no fingerprints.”
In terms of results, a significant 737,308 candidates, representing 61.60 percent, passed with five credits and above, while 1,013,611 candidates, constituting 84.68 percent, achieved five credits, irrespective of their performance in English and Mathematics.
